چکیده
Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the ability and safety of driving with commonly used upper limb casts, and to determine the effect of hand dominance. Material and Methods: Two healthy drivers, one of them right-handed and the other left-handed (confirmed with the Edinburgh handedness inventory), were selected. The vehicles used in this study were the 2006 model Volkswagen Golf with a manual-geared right-hand drive with power steering and the 2004 model Honda Civic with an automatic-geared right-hand drive with power steering. We assessed driving ability and safety whilst wearing a scaphoid cast and a Colles cast. Initially, a 20-min driving circuit was completed without immobilisation by each volunteer on a track which was closed to traffic. Six essential driving abilities, namely steering and turning, reversing, gear changing and panel control were assessed subjectively by the drivers. Each of the driving abilities was scored between 0 and 10 points. Each score acquired from the relevant section was added to obtain a total score. Scores taken from each section and the total scores were compared in terms of plaster cast type, gear option, body side and dexterity. Results: Driving scores were statistically similar regarding dexterity and gear option in total and section scores (p=0.878, p=0.442). A difference between the Colles cast and the scaphoid cast was only observed in panel control (p=0.010). Immobilisation of the left hand significantly decreased the total score (p=0.001); however, gear shifting and panel control sections were similar between body sides (p=0.105 and p=0.442, respectively). All scores obtained from each section were significantly lower compared to controlled driving (p=0.000). Conclusion: Driving with an upper limb cast is unsafe; furthermore, immobilisation of the non-dominant hand does not satisfy the necessary requirements for safe driving. We should discourage patients and warn them about the dangers of driving when wearing an upper limb plaster cast. (JAEM 2013; 12: 122-5)

Upper Extremity Surgery in Spastic Cerebral Palsy Serebral Paralizide Üst Ekstremite Cerrahisi
Involvement of the upper extremity in cerebral palsy often results in a typical pattern of spasticity, with elbow flexion, forearm pronation, ulnar deviation and flexion of the wrist, and adduction-flexion posture of the thumb. Although only a relatively small subset of cerebral palsy patients are candidates for surgery, properly selected patients and procedures yield a reasonable improvement. ...
متن کاملImmobilisation of the knee and ankle and its impact on drivers' braking times: a driving simulator study.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of right leg restriction at the knee, ankle or both, on a driver's braking times. Previous studies have not investigated the effects of knee restriction on braking performance. A total of 23 healthy drivers performed a series of emergency braking tests in a driving simulator in either an above-knee plaster cast, a below-knee cast, or in a...

OBJECTIVES To compare traditional plaster casts, digital models and 3D printed copies of dental plaster casts based on various criteria. To determine whether 3D printed copies obtained using open source system RepRap can replace traditional plaster casts in dental practice. To compare and contrast the qualities of two possible 3D printing options--source system RepRap and commercially available...
متن کاملlearning zone - Orthopaedic plaster casting: nurse and patient education
Orthopaedic casts are used to treat fractures, provide pain relief and support, and correct deformities (RCN 2000, Larsen 2002, Dandy and Edwards 2003, Nielsen and Ricketts 2005). Several different types of material are available for orthopaedic casts, including plaster of Paris, semi-rigid non-fibreglass (softcast), and a variety of resin-based synthetic materials such as rigid fibreglass. Pla...

Calcined gypsum (calcium sul phate hemihydrate, CaS04 1/2H20), commonly known as plas ter of Paris, is used extensively in forming casts to immobilize parts of the body and for making molds used in the manufacture of orthotic and prosthetic devices. Plaster models and casts have several advantages, and a few disadvantages. Widely available, plaster is inert, sufficiently stable dimensionally,...
